Decals & Markings

Decals not sticking, bubbling or wrinkling over detail

Decals that lift at edges, bubble, or sit on top of curves and panel lines instead of hugging them. A gloss base and a setting solution or softener usually fix it.

Quick answer

Decals need a smooth gloss surface, a little water or setting solution underneath, and time. If they will not stick, the surface is matt or dirty, or the glue was soaked off. If they bridge curves or wrinkle, apply a decal softener and leave it: decals often wrinkle while softening and then flatten as they dry. Prick bubbles with a fine needle and add softener. Seal with clear coat once dry.

  • Time10-20 minutes per decal plus drying
  • DifficultyBeginner to intermediate

Safety first

  • Decal solutions can contain mild acids or solvents: avoid eyes, ventilate.

Is this your problem?

You'll see

Edges lift after drying, the decal slides off, bubbles appear, or the film bridges over panel lines, rivets and compound curves. Sometimes it wrinkles after a softener is applied.

Likely causes

  • Matt or dusty surfaceThe decal adhesive cannot grip a rough or dusty surface evenly.
  • Over-soakingThe decal's own glue washes away in the water.
  • No softener on curves or detailDecal film is stiff; it needs softening to follow shapes.
  • Trapped water or airPockets dry into bubbles.
  • Touching the decal while softener worksSoftened film is fragile and tears or distorts.

What you need

  • Gloss varnish
  • Decal setting solution and softener
  • Soft applicator
  • Fine needle
  • Clear varnish to seal

How to fix it

  1. Gloss-coat the area and let it cure.
  2. Brush setting solution (or water) on the spot.
  3. Slide the decal into place and blot from the center outwards.
  4. Brush decal softener over the decal on curves and detail; do not touch it afterwards.
  5. Once dry, prick any bubbles or bridged areas over panel lines with a fine needle and apply more softener.
  6. Repeat softener applications if needed, then seal with clear coat.

What to avoid

  • Touching a softening decal.
  • Applying decals on matt paint.
  • Flooding thin decals with strong softener.

Common wrong fixes

  • Using hot air to force decals down: wrinkles them and can warp plastic.
  • Pressing a wrinkling decal flat while wet: tears it.

Not worth fixing, or time to ask us

If a decal will not soften at all, it may be thick or old; ask us about alternatives.

By situation or hobby

Rivets and panel lines (armor, aircraft)

Several light softener applications work better than one heavy one; press gently with a damp swab once soft.

Compound curves (car bodies, Gunpla shoulders)

Cut slits in the decal film where it must fold, then soften.

No setting solution

Water alone works on flat surfaces; curves benefit from softener.

Gunpla stickers (not waterslide)

Stickers lift with time; a top coat helps hold them.

Already ruined?

A dried, bridged decal: prick, soften and press with a damp swab. A badly wrinkled dried decal: more softener may flatten it; if not, remove and replace.

Next time

  • Gloss before decals.
  • Short soak.
  • Setting solution under, softener over.
  • Hands off while softening.
  • Seal after.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my decals not sticking to the model?

Usually a matt or dusty surface, or the glue was soaked off. Gloss the area and use setting solution.

How do you get decals to conform to curves?

Use a decal softener, cut slits where the film must fold, and do not touch it while it works.

Will decal bubbles go away?

Small bubbles often do as softener works. Otherwise prick them with a fine needle and apply softener.

Why did my decal wrinkle after softener?

Wrinkling is often a normal stage as the film softens; it usually flattens as it dries.

Jargon explained
Decal setting solution
A solution applied under decals to help them grip and settle.
Decal softener
A solution applied over decals to soften film so it conforms.
