Gunpla stickers peeling off or not sticking

Foil and seal stickers that lift at corners or will not stay on curves. Clean, trim, press and top coat.

Quick answer

Gunpla stickers peel when oils or dust are on the part, when they bridge a curve, or when they take handling wear over time. Clean the part, cut the sticker out close to the print, place it with tweezers or a blade tip rather than fingers, press the edges down with a soft tool, and seal it with a top coat. Large stickers on curved parts may need small relief cuts.

  • TimeRescue: 10-20 minutes per sticker plus top coat drying
  • DifficultyBeginner

Safety first

  • Use a sharp blade carefully and cut away from fingers.
  • Ventilate when using alcohol or spray top coats.

Is this your problem?

  • Edges lifting on a flat surfaceDirty or oily surface, or touched adhesive: this page.
  • Sticker bubbles or tents over a curveSticker is bridging the curve: relief cuts or a waterslide decal may suit better. See Decals not sticking or wrinkling.
  • Sticker looks silver or has trapped air underneath after top coatSee Decals silvering.
  • Part is painted and sticker will not grip paintPaint may not be cured or may be shedding; see Paint rubbing off or not sticking.
  • Sticker came off and left glue marksRemove glue gently, see Recovery.

You'll see

Foil seals or sticker sheets lifting at the corners, bubbling over curves, collecting dust on their adhesive edges, or falling off completely after the kit is handled or posed.

Likely causes

  • Oily or dusty surface.Finger grease and dust prevent the adhesive from gripping.
  • Stickers bridging curves.A flat sticker pulls back from a curve and lifts at the edges.
  • Handling wear.Edges catch on fingers while posing and snag over time.
  • Touching the adhesive.Finger grease on the adhesive weakens the bond.

What you need

  • Tweezers with fine tips
  • Hobby knife with a fresh blade
  • Cotton swab or soft applicator for pressing
  • Mild cleaner or isopropyl alcohol on a swab, if the part is unpainted or the paint is cured
  • Top coat suited to your paint (water-based acrylic or lacquer)
  • Lint-free cloth

How to fix it

  1. Wipe the part with a lint-free cloth and, if safe for the plastic and paint, a lightly damp swab of alcohol; let it dry.
  2. Cut the sticker out close to the printed area, so little transparent border remains to lift.
  3. Lift it with tweezers or the tip of a blade, touching only the edges of the backing, not the adhesive.
  4. Position it, then press from the center outward with a soft applicator so air goes out.
  5. Press the edges and corners down firmly and hold for a few seconds.
  6. For curves, make small relief cuts at the edges so the sticker can follow the shape, or warm it very gently only if the maker allows.
  7. Seal with a thin top coat once the sticker is fully set, testing first on a spare part.

What to avoid

  • Touching the adhesive.
  • Pulling stickers off and reapplying many times.
  • Applying to dusty or oily parts.
  • Using strong solvents on painted or unpainted plastic without testing.

Common wrong fixes

  • Adding super glue under a lifted sticker, which can mark plastic and foil.
  • Pressing hard with a fingernail and scratching the foil.
  • Top coating over a sticker that is still lifting.

By situation or hobby

Foil seal on bare plastic

Clean and press well. Unpainted plastic is often the best surface for foil seals.

Sticker on painted surface

Make sure the paint is fully cured, and keep the surface smooth, ideally with a gloss coat first.

Water-slide decals instead of stickers

They look thinner and sit better under a top coat, but need more care and a gloss base.

Matte parts

Stickers grip better on a smooth surface; add a gloss patch before applying if the finish is rough.

Already ruined?

A lifted sticker can sometimes be pressed back and sealed, but once its adhesive has gathered dust or fingerprints it rarely grips again. Replace it from a spare sheet or use a water-slide decal. Adhesive left behind can be rubbed gently with a cotton swab and a little alcohol on plastic that tolerates it; test first, as solvents can mark plastic and paint.

Next time

  • Clean parts and handle stickers with tweezers.
  • Press edges firmly, especially corners.
  • Add a thin top coat after placement.
  • Avoid posing the kit by rubbing sticker edges.
  • Keep spare stickers in their sleeves, flat and dry.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop Gunpla stickers peeling?

Clean the surface, press edges and corners firmly, and seal with a top coat.

Do Gunpla stickers need a top coat?

Not required, but a thin top coat protects edges from handling. Test on a spare piece first.

Stickers or water decals for Gunpla?

Water decals look thinner and settle better under a top coat; stickers are quicker and easier.

How do I get stickers to stay on curved parts?

Cut small relief notches in the sticker, press from the center, and consider a water decal for tight curves.

Can I re-stick a peeled sticker?

Sometimes briefly, but once the adhesive has dust or grease it rarely holds. Replacing it works better.

Jargon explained
Foil seal

Relief cut
