Weathering & Finishing

Patchy varnish or uneven sheen

Glossy and dull areas side by side after mixing brush work, airbrushing, decals and washes, or matt varnish that dried shiny. One well-mixed, even final coat fixes most cases.

Quick answer

Uneven sheen comes from different paints, decals and washes each drying to their own finish, and from matt varnish that was not mixed well or went on unevenly. Shake or stir the varnish thoroughly (the matting agent settles at the bottom), then spray one even final coat over the whole model in thin passes. Matt that dried shiny usually needs another thin, well-mixed matt coat.

Safety first

  • Ventilate and use suitable respiratory protection when spraying varnish.

Is this your problem?

  • Matt varnish dried shiny or satinMatting agent not mixed in, or applied too wet/thick: remix and re-coat thinly.
  • The finish turned white, cloudy or frostedThat is frosting or blushing, not sheen: see the varnish turned white page.
  • Specks and rough bits in the varnishSee Dust in the paint or varnish.
  • Shiny rectangles around decalsCarrier film: a final unifying coat hides it.

You'll see

Some areas look glossy and others dull, so the finish looks blotchy, especially in raking light. Decals may have shiny edges; brushed areas may look shinier than sprayed ones.

Likely causes

  • Varnish not mixedMatting agents are solid particles that settle; unmixed varnish sprays glossier at first and flatter later.
  • Different finishes on one modelGloss for decals, washes, brush touch-ups and different paint brands each dry to their own sheen.
  • Uneven applicationWet, heavy areas dry glossier; thin, dry areas dry flatter.
  • Brush-applied varnish poolingVarnish collects in recesses and edges, leaving glossier pools.

What you need

  • Varnish in the final sheen you want
  • Paint shaker or stirring tool
  • Airbrush or spray can
  • Test card or spare part

How to fix it

  1. Let all paint, decals and washes dry and cure.
  2. Shake or stir the varnish thoroughly until no sediment remains at the bottom.
  3. Test spray on card or a spare part to confirm the sheen.
  4. Spray one even coat over the whole model in thin, overlapping passes, keeping distance and speed steady.
  5. Add a second thin coat if needed rather than one heavy coat.
  6. Let it cure before handling.

What to avoid

  • Heavy wet coats that run.
  • Varnishing before decals and washes are finished.
  • Unmixed varnish straight from a settled bottle.

Common wrong fixes

  • Rubbing shiny areas with a cloth to dull them: it polishes them shinier.
  • Spraying matt very thick to get flatter: thick coats can frost or stay shiny.

Not worth fixing, or time to ask us

Patchy sheen on a model you will weather heavily does not usually matter. Ask us if the varnish turns cloudy or white instead.

By situation or hobby

Spray cans

Warm the can to room temperature, shake for the time on the can, and spray in light passes from the distance the maker gives.

Airbrushed varnish

Stir rather than only shake; thin per the maker; keep the cup moving if it sits long.

Brush-on varnish

Use thin coats and a soft wide brush; do not go back over areas that have started to dry.

Minis with metallic areas

Matt varnish dulls metallics; many painters re-touch metallics or apply a gloss spot after the matt coat.

Already ruined?

Matt that came out shiny: wait for cure, then a light coat of well-mixed matt. Gloss areas that should be matt: same. If matt went cloudy instead, see the frosting page before adding more coats.

Next time

  • Mix varnish thoroughly every time.
  • Finish every model with one unifying coat.
  • Thin, even passes.
  • Test the sheen first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my matte varnish shiny?

Usually the matting agent was not mixed in, or the coat went on too wet or thick. Remix and apply a thin new coat.

Should I use satin or matt varnish?

Satin suits most vehicles and Gunpla and shows less frosting; matt suits figures and very weathered models. Test both.

How many coats of varnish do I need?

Usually one or two thin coats. Several thin coats give a more even finish than one heavy one.

Can I put matt varnish over gloss?

Yes, once the gloss has cured. That is the usual order after decals and washes.

Jargon explained
Sheen
How shiny a surface looks: gloss, satin, semi-gloss or matt.
Matting agent
Fine particles in matt varnish that scatter light.
