How to Thin Paint for Airbrushing Scale Models
Forget the mythical “perfect ratio.” Learn how viscosity, PSI, nozzle size and paint chemistry work together so you can diagnose the mix in seconds.
Most bad airbrush advice starts with a fixed ratio. “Use 1:1.” “Always use 2:1 thinner to paint.” The problem is that two bottles from different brands — or even two colors from the same range — can have different starting viscosities. The useful skill is not memorizing one number; it is learning how to recognise a mix that atomizes cleanly, lands wet enough to level, and does not flood the surface.
The short answer: start with a ratio, finish by reading the spray
If you need a starting point, many hobby acrylics work somewhere around equal parts paint and thinner or with more thinner than paint. But treat that as a test mix, not a law. A 0.2 mm nozzle, a 0.5 mm nozzle, high-flow paint, heavy primer and a translucent post-shading mix all need different settings.
What “properly thinned” paint should actually do
No large droplets, pulsing or random specks around the spray pattern.
The paint should build in thin passes instead of forming wet puddles or spider legs.
A normal coat should look slightly wet when it lands, then settle without turning pebbly.
For scale models, two to four controlled passes are usually safer than one opaque blast.
Why there is no universal paint-to-thinner ratio
Five variables change the mix you need:
- Paint viscosity: “airbrush ready” paint starts thinner than standard brush paint.
- Pigment and color: whites, yellows and some metallics can behave very differently from blacks or transparent colors.
- Nozzle size: smaller nozzles are less tolerant of thick paint and larger pigment.
- Air pressure: more pressure can atomize a thicker mix, but it also increases overspray and can dry paint faster at the tip.
- The effect you want: broad primer coverage, fine camouflage and post-shading should not use the same mix.
A practical starting chart

These are deliberately starting zones, not guaranteed recipes. Your airbrush, thinner, local temperature and paint brand can move the useful range.
The 60-second test before touching the model
Do not judge viscosity while pigment is still sitting on the bottom of the cup. Stir or shake first, then thin. If a bottle has settled heavily, a Portable Magnetic Paint Stirrer can make repeat mixing less tedious.
Start moving before releasing paint. A clean line tells you far more than spraying a static dot.
Large droplets or a rough halo suggest poor atomization. A wet starburst suggests too much paint for the pressure/distance.
If it covers smoothly without flooding or chalky texture, your mix is in the usable window.
How to diagnose the mix from the spray pattern
Paint comes out in specks or feels “dry”
First check tip dry. If the needle tip is clean, the paint may be too thick, pressure too low, distance too great, or the paint may be drying before it reaches the surface. Thin slightly or move a little closer before automatically raising PSI.
Paint spiders across the surface
The paint is arriving too wet for the amount of air and distance. Reduce paint flow, lower pressure, increase distance slightly, or use a little less thinner. Do not keep adding thinner simply because the line is not fine enough.
Airbrush sprays, stops, then sprays again
This often points to a partial clog, dried paint, poorly mixed pigment or debris rather than a ratio problem. Passing older or heavily pigmented mixes through Paint Strainer Cups before they enter the airbrush can save a lot of troubleshooting.
Surface looks chalky or dusty
The paint may be drying in the air. Move closer, reduce pressure, use an appropriate retarder/flow improver if the paint system supports it, or slightly increase thinning so the coat lands wetter.
Should you mix paint inside the airbrush cup?
You can, but a separate mixing cup is more consistent and makes it easier to see unmixed pigment or dried flakes. If you do mix in the airbrush cup, add thinner first, then paint, and stir thoroughly without forcing a brush or metal tool into the needle/nozzle area.
