Hairspray chipping not working: how to fix fake-looking chips
Chipping that will not lift, lifts in sheets or looks evenly spotty. Timing, thin top coats and restraint fix most of it.
Quick answer
Hairspray (or chipping fluid) chipping works when a thin top color sits over a soluble layer and is worked with water soon after it has dried. If nothing chips, the top coat is probably too thick or has cured too long; if it lifts in sheets, the layer is too heavy or you are scrubbing too hard. For realism, keep chips smaller and concentrated on edges, steps and wear areas, vary their size, and avoid spreading them evenly everywhere. Sponge chipping looks best with a torn sponge, most of the paint blotted off, and fewer, varied chips.

Safety first
- Hairspray and chipping fluids can be flammable. Use with ventilation and away from flames.
- Wear a respirator suited to the spray you use.
- Wear gloves if the products irritate your skin.

You'll see
Either the paint will not chip at all, or whole panels peel off in sheets, or the chips are all the same size and evenly spread like polka dots or speckles.
Likely causes
- Top coat too thick or left too longA thick or fully cured film resists the water and will not lift in small chips.
- Too much hairspray or fluidA heavy layer makes the top coat lift in sheets.
- Uniform chip size and spacingReal chips are irregular, clustered and varied.
- Chips in places real paint would not wearWear belongs on edges, hatches, steps and handled areas, not flat panels in the middle.
- Weak base layerIf the chipping layer peels away together with the primer, the base was not bonded.
What you need
- Hairspray or chipping fluid
- Base paint (rust or primer color)
- Thin top color
- Water and a stiff brush or toothpicks
- Sponge (for sponge chipping)
- Matt varnish
- Spare part for testing
How to fix it
- Seal the base color (rust, primer or metal tone) and let it cure so it will not lift with the top coat.
- Spray one or two light coats of hairspray or chipping fluid, as the maker advises, and let them dry. Do not spray heavily.
- Spray a thin top color. Keep it light, since thick coats do not chip.
- After the top coat is dry to the touch, wet a small area with water and work it with a stiff brush or toothpick. Start gently and increase pressure only as needed.
- Concentrate chips on edges, corners, hatches, steps, handrails and handled areas. Vary size, with some larger chips and many tiny ones.
- Stop when the pattern looks right. Let it dry and seal with matt varnish.
- For sponge chipping, tear a piece of foam, load it, blot most of the paint off on paper, and dab sparingly, mostly on edges and wear areas.
What to avoid
- Chipping everywhere evenly.
- Scrubbing hard so whole panels lift.
- Heavy coats of hairspray.
- Chips of identical size.
Common wrong fixes
- Sanding the top coat in an attempt to make it chip.
- Adding more hairspray on top of the top coat.
- Using extremely hot water.
Not worth fixing, or time to ask us
Ask us which brushes or sponges suit the scale you work in and the amount of wear you want to show.
By situation or hobby
Armor and vehicles
Chips cluster around hatches, engine decks, fenders, tool mounts and tracks.
Aircraft
Wear appears at wing roots, access panels and leading edges. Bare metal shows through paint there.
Ships and railway stock
Chips gather near waterlines, decks, handrails, roofs and doors. Keep them tight and varied.
Gunpla and sci-fi kits
Use sparse battle damage on edges and corners. Overdone chipping looks cartoonish.
Hairspray vs chipping fluid
Chipping fluid is made for the job and usually more consistent than hairspray, whose ingredients vary. Test either one on a spare part.
Already ruined?
Chips that look fake are usually fixed by covering them with a thin coat of the top color and chipping again more carefully. If the paint lifted in large sheets, you may need to repaint the damaged panel; touch up with the base and top colors using a fine brush or sponge and stipple the patch to blend it in. If the damage is severe, strip the panel and start again.
Next time
- Test the full layer stack on a spare part first.
- Use thin top coats and light hairspray or fluid layers.
- Work the chips soon after the top coat is dry.
- Plan where wear would happen before you begin.
- Chip less than you think you need.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my hairspray chipping not working?
Usually the top coat is too thick or has cured too long, or there is too little hairspray or fluid. Spray thin top coats and work the paint soon after it dries.
Why does my paint peel off in sheets?
There is too much hairspray or fluid, the top coat is too thick, or you scrub too hard. Use thinner layers and gentle pressure.
Is hairspray or chipping fluid better?
Chipping fluid is made for the job and usually more consistent. Hairspray works but varies by brand, so test it.
How do I make chips look realistic?
Concentrate them on edges and wear areas, vary their size and keep them smaller than you think.
Can I do chipping with just a sponge?
Yes. Tear a piece of foam, blot most of the paint off, then dab sparingly on edges and corners.
Jargon explained
- Hairspray technique
- Spraying hairspray between two paint layers so the top layer can be chipped away with water.
- Sponge chipping
- Dabbing paint with a torn sponge to imitate small chips.
- Chipping fluid
- A product made for the layered chipping technique, used in place of hairspray.
