Every serious N scale layout needs at least one tunnel — and a convincing tunnel starts with the right portal.

These stone tunnel portals feature a realistic cut stone and brick texture that adds instant depth and believability to any mountain, hillside, or embankment scene. Each piece is molded in a neutral gray tone, ready to use straight out of the box or easy to customize with washes, dry brushing, and weathering techniques to match your specific layout era and setting.

What makes these different from generic portals?

Unlike flat, featureless alternatives, these portals have individually defined stone and brick courses across the entire surface — including the arch, wing walls, and cap stones. The level of surface detail means they respond beautifully to painting and weathering, picking up washes and highlights the way real masonry does.

They work perfectly for:

  • N scale (1:160) model railway mountain and tunnel scenery
  • Diorama builds and micro landscapes
  • Wargaming terrain and tabletop scenery
  • Architectural model presentations
  • Any project where a realistic stone arch structure is needed at roughly 1:150–1:160 scale

Four variants available — choose the one that fits your scene:

Variant 1 — Single Track Tunnel Portal (3D / Deep) A three-dimensional tunnel entrance with actual depth — not just a flat face. The portal extends back, giving the illusion of a real tunnel bore when placed against scenery. Wing walls taper naturally into the terrain.

  • Overall size: 44.3 × 60.0mm (1.74" × 2.36")
  • Arch opening: 36.8mm wide (1.44")
  • Base footprint: 53.1 × 24.2mm (2.09" × 0.95")

Variant 2 — Double Arch Viaduct / Bridge Pier A double-arched stone viaduct section, perfect for creating bridge piers, aqueducts, or elevated railway crossings. Place two or more side by side for a longer viaduct run.

  • Overall size: 90.3 × 60.0mm (3.55" × 2.36")
  • Each arch opening: 36.8mm wide (1.44")
  • Base footprint: 99.3 × 24.2mm (3.90" × 0.95")

Variant 3 — Stone Arch Footbridge A beautiful single-arch stone bridge with tapered approach ramps on both sides. Ideal for spanning a river, stream, canal, or road crossing in a countryside or village scene.

  • Arch span and ramps create a naturally proportioned bridge profile
  • Height and proportions are consistent with the other variants in this range

Variant 4 — Single Track Tunnel Portal (Flat) The classic single-track tunnel entrance. A clean, flat portal with a generous stone arch opening. Ideal for embedding into a hillside or mountain face.

  • Overall size: 118.7 × 71.2mm (4.67" × 2.80")
  • Arch opening: 54.0 × 83.1mm (2.12" × 3.27")
  • Depth: 9.5mm (0.37")
  • Base width: 72.8mm (2.86")

Material & finish: Molded in durable plastic with a matte gray finish. The neutral color serves as an excellent base for painting — prime it or paint it directly with acrylics. The stone texture takes washes and dry brushing exceptionally well.

Painting tips: For a quick, realistic finish, apply a dark brown or black wash over the entire piece to fill the mortar lines, then dry brush with a lighter gray or off-white to highlight the individual stones. Add green or brown weathering around the base for moss and dirt accumulation. A light rust wash around water drainage areas adds extra realism.

Scale compatibility: Designed for N scale (1:160), but also works well with scales in the 1:144 to 1:200 range depending on your application. Always check the dimensions above against your track gauge and rolling stock clearance before ordering.
