1/48 1/35 1/24 PE Ostrich Fern
Photoetched plant leaves recreating Matteuccia struthiopteris — the ostrich fern, a real-world fern species native to temperate forests across North America, Europe, and Asia. The feathery, plume-like fronds are unmistakable and instantly read as authentic forest vegetation.
Ostrich ferns are exactly the species you'd expect to see growing in European and North American woodland — the kind of foliage that anchors a diorama in a believable temperate climate. The PE format captures the delicate feathery detail that paper or plastic alternatives can't deliver at scale.
Choose your scale:
- 1/48: small-scale dioramas, aircraft scenes
- 1/35: standard military modeling — most common diorama scale
- 1/24: large-scale dioramas and figure bases
Works great for:
- European and North American woodland dioramas — Western Front, Eastern Front, forest scenes
- WWII Ardennes, Hurtgen Forest, and Eastern Front woodland combat scenes
- Modern temperate-climate dioramas — North America, Northern Europe settings
- Botanically-accurate scenes — when correct species matters for realism
- Forest floor and shaded undergrowth vignettes
Key features:
- Photoetched plant leaves — Matteuccia struthiopteris (ostrich fern)
- 3 scale options (1/48, 1/35, 1/24)
- Distinctive feathery, plume-shaped fronds
- Cut from fret with hobby knife or PE scissors
- Attach with CA glue (super glue)
How to use:
- Cut individual fronds from the brass fret with a sharp hobby knife or PE scissors
- Gently bend each frond to create natural curvature — ostrich fern fronds arch outward and upward
- Prime with metal primer, then paint with acrylics — vibrant greens with darker tones at the base
- Plant in clusters of 3-5 fronds rising from a single base point
- Add weathering pigments to integrate with the surrounding ground cover
Tip: Real ostrich ferns grow in tight clusters with multiple fronds rising from a single crown. Plant a small group together rather than scattered single fronds for natural realism.
