Painting & Airbrushing

Airbrush clogged or only spraying air

Air comes out but little or no paint. Almost always dried paint in the nozzle or around the needle, or paint too thick to flow.

Quick answer

If an airbrush sprays air but no paint, paint cannot get through the nozzle. Wipe dried paint off the needle tip, thin the paint, and back-flush. If that fails, strip the front end, soak and brush the nozzle and paint channel with the right cleaner, check the needle is straight and the nozzle uncracked, and reassemble without overtightening.

  • Time10-30 minutes
  • DifficultyBeginner to intermediate

Safety first

  • Release air pressure before disassembly.
  • Ventilate and wear gloves when using solvent cleaners; keep them away from flames.

Is this your problem?

  • Air only, paint in cupBlocked nozzle or paint too thick.
  • Paint sprays then fades during the sessionTip dry building up: see Airbrush tip dry.
  • Clogged right after cleaningCleaner reacted with paint residue (wrong solvent) or debris left in: strip and clean again.
  • Spits or splattersSee Airbrush spitting.
  • Paint bubbles back into the cupBlockage forcing air back, or a loose nozzle.
  • Needle will not move or feels grittyDried paint in the body: full strip-down.

You'll see

Pulling the trigger gives air but no paint, a weak intermittent spray, or paint only after pulling far back. Sometimes it started after a color change or cleaning.

Likely causes

  • Dried paint in the nozzleResidue from earlier sessions narrows or blocks the tiny opening.
  • Paint too thick or flakyThick paint or dried flakes cannot pass a 0.2-0.3mm nozzle.
  • Wrong cleaner for the paintSome acrylics turn gummy with alcohol or lacquer thinner and set in the nozzle.
  • Metallic pigmentsHeavy metal flakes settle and lodge in small nozzles.
  • Damaged needle or nozzleA bent needle or cracked nozzle seals badly and disturbs flow.

What you need

  • Cleaner matching your paint
  • Cleaning pot
  • Small interdental-style cleaning brushes
  • Nozzle wrench (supplied with most airbrushes)
  • Paint filters
  • Cotton swabs

How to fix it

  1. Empty the cup and spray cleaner through.
  2. Remove the needle cap and wipe the needle tip clean.
  3. Back-flush: cover the front (or use the cleaning pot) and press the trigger briefly so air bubbles back into the cup, loosening the blockage. Only do this briefly and with low pressure.
  4. If still blocked: remove the needle from the back, carefully unscrew the nozzle with its wrench, and soak nozzle and cap in cleaner.
  5. Brush the paint channel with a small cleaning brush; push the needle gently through the nozzle from the back to clear it. Never force anything through from the front.
  6. Inspect the nozzle for cracks and the needle tip for bends under a light.
  7. Reassemble snugly (do not overtighten the nozzle), test with cleaner, then with thinned, filtered paint on card.

What to avoid

  • Poking a pin or wire through the nozzle from the front.
  • Soaking seals and O-rings in strong solvents unless the maker says it is safe.
  • Overtightening the nozzle.

Common wrong fixes

  • Raising pressure to force paint through: it does not clear a dried blockage.
  • Ultrasonic cleaning every small clog: it can loosen parts; follow the maker's advice.

Not worth fixing, or time to ask us

If it still sprays only air after a full strip and clean, tell us your airbrush model and nozzle size; it may need a new nozzle or needle.

By situation or hobby

Acrylics

Use the paint maker's airbrush cleaner; some acrylics clump in alcohol or lacquer thinner.

Lacquers and enamels

Their thinners clean well but need ventilation and gloves.

Self-centring vs screw-in nozzles

Screw-in nozzles crack easily: hand-tight with the wrench is enough. Self-centring nozzles can drop out and get lost; strip over a tray.

Gravity vs siphon feed

Siphon-feed tubes also clog: clean the pickup tube and bottle lid.

Already ruined?

If the nozzle is cracked or the needle tip bent, replace it; a bent tip can sometimes be straightened and honed. If paint has dried through the whole body, a long soak of the metal parts in the appropriate cleaner (not seals, unless the maker allows) and a full strip-down usually brings it back.

Next time

  • Clean after every session and at color changes.
  • Filter paint.
  • Use the right cleaner.
  • Keep the needle tip clean during sessions.
  • Store clean and dry.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my airbrush only spraying air?

The nozzle is blocked with dried paint, or the paint is too thick to flow. Clean the nozzle and thin the paint.

How do I unclog an airbrush nozzle?

Soak it in the right cleaner, brush it, and clear it from the back with the needle. Never force anything through the front.

Why is my airbrush clogged after cleaning?

Often the cleaner turned paint residue gummy, or debris remained in the channel. Strip and clean again with the paint maker's cleaner.

How often should I clean my airbrush?

Flush at every color change and do a proper clean after each session; strip it fully every so often.

Can I use isopropyl alcohol to clean my airbrush?

It works for many acrylics, but some turn gummy with it. Check the paint maker's advice.

Jargon explained
Back-flushing
Briefly blocking the front so air pushes back through the nozzle into the cup to loosen paint.
Nozzle
The tiny tip the needle seats into, where paint leaves the airbrush.

Tools that can help

  • 8Pcs Airbrush Cleaning & Repair Set €38,95

Why it helps: Includes accessories such as a needle nut removal tool and valve tool for taking an airbrush apart to clean it.

    How to use it

Use the tools to strip the front end and clean each part.

  • 100pcs Mini Brushes For Airbrush Cleaning €24,95

Why it helps: Small brushes for cleaning the airbrush internally to prevent clogging.

    How to use it

Brush the paint channel and nozzle area.

  • Mazha 480ML Airbrush Cleaning Pot €51,95

Why it helps: A pressurized cleaning pot for flushing cups, needles and nozzles without wasting solvent.

    How to use it

Back-flush into it and spray cleaner through.

  • 2pcs Paint Strainer Cup For Airbrush €18,95

Why it helps: Strainer cups that catch paint flakes before they reach the airbrush cup and clog the nozzle.

    How to use it

Pour old or mixed paint through it.

  • 0.2/0.3/0.5 Airbrush Needles €15,95

Why it helps: Replacement 0.2/0.3/0.5 needles, since a bent tip ruins the spray.

    How to use it

Replace a needle that cannot be straightened; match your airbrush's size.
