A note about glue application
More adhesive is rarely better. Excess glue can squeeze onto visible surfaces, soften plastic or make cleanup harder. Apply only what the joint needs. Step by Step: Your First Scale Model Build
Use this workflow for the first few kits. The sequence matters because it catches mistakes while they are still cheap and easy to fix.
1. Read the instructions before cutting anything
Look for assemblies that become difficult to paint once closed, parts that must move, and areas where several components meet. You do not need to memorize the manual; you need to understand the order of operations.
2. Inspect the parts
Check for obvious damage, flash or warped parts. Washing every modern plastic kit by default is not a useful ritual; clean parts if they are visibly dusty, greasy, contaminated or the manufacturer recommends it.
3. Cut the part away from the sprue
Make the first cut slightly away from the finished surface. This reduces the chance of stress marks or gouges. Then make a controlled second cleanup cut.
4. Trim and sand the nub
Use a knife only for controlled trimming, then sand the remaining mark. Start coarse enough to remove the defect and move finer to restore the surface. Do not keep grinding after the mark has disappeared.
5. Dry-fit the parts
Press the parts together without glue. Check alignment, gaps and whether nearby pieces interfere. This is one of the highest-value habits in model building.
6. Glue only after the fit makes sense
Use the correct adhesive for the material and apply it sparingly. Hold or clamp the joint only as much as needed to keep it aligned.
7. Deal with seams before paint
Once the joint is cured, inspect it under good light. Sand obvious seams and re-check the contour with a fingertip. Paint tends to exaggerate surface defects rather than hide them.
8. Decide what stays as a sub-assembly
Do not glue everything simply because the instructions show it in one diagram. If joining a part makes painting or access unnecessarily difficult, keep it separate until later.
9. Prime if you are painting
Primer gives you a consistent surface and makes scratches, seams and missed cleanup easier to see. If you discover a flaw, fix it now rather than burying it under color coats.
10. Paint in thin, controlled coats
Whether brushing or spraying, avoid trying to reach full opacity in one heavy pass. Let layers dry and keep handling to a minimum.
11. Add decals and optional panel detail
