Weathering & Finishing

Varnish or top coat turned white or cloudy

A matt or clear coat that dries with a white, frosted or milky bloom. Usually humidity, cold, or a coat applied too heavy. Often rescuable.

Quick answer

White or cloudy varnish (frosting or blushing) happens when moisture is trapped as the coat dries, or when matt varnish is applied too heavily or unmixed. Let it dry, then try a thin coat of gloss varnish in warm, dry conditions, which often clears much of the frosting, and re-apply a thin, well-mixed matt or satin coat afterwards. Prevent it by spraying in low humidity at room temperature with light coats.

  • TimeRescue: 30-60 minutes plus drying. Prevention: no extra time.
  • DifficultyIntermediate

Safety first

  • Ventilate and wear a respirator suited to the product when spraying varnish.
  • Never warm spray cans with direct heat or above warm water temperature.

Is this your problem?

  • White haze over large areas after a matt sprayFrosting or blushing: this page.
  • White haze only around glued jointsSuper glue frosting: see Super glue white residue.
  • Some areas shiny, some dull, but no whiteSee Patchy or uneven sheen.
  • Fine cracks, wrinkles or crazingSee Clear coat cracking or paint wrinkling.
  • White powder in recesses after an all-over matt brush coatMatting agent pooled in recesses: dab out with a damp brush or gloss-and-redo.

You'll see

After varnishing, the model has a whitish, chalky, frosted or milky haze, often worst in recesses, on dark colors and where the coat went on heaviest. Sometimes it appears only on some parts sprayed in the same session.

Likely causes

  • High humidityFast-evaporating solvents cool the surface; moisture condenses into the wet film and gets trapped as tiny white droplets (blushing).
  • Cold can, cold room or cold modelCold surfaces make condensation more likely and spray cans atomise poorly when cold.
  • Heavy or wet matt coatsToo much matting agent builds up and scatters light as a white film; thick coats also trap more moisture.
  • Unmixed varnishSettled matting agent sprays out in concentrated bursts.
  • Uncured paint underneathSolvents escaping from paint below can cloud the varnish.

What you need

  • Gloss varnish compatible with your system
  • Matt or satin varnish
  • Paint shaker or stirrer
  • Warm, dry room (dehumidifier helps)
  • Test card

How to fix it

  1. Stop adding coats and let the frosted coat dry completely.
  2. Move to a warm, dry room. Warm a spray can to room temperature (for example in warm, not hot, water).
  3. Test first on the least visible part: spray a thin, wet-looking coat of gloss varnish. In many cases the frosting clears noticeably as the gloss fills the rough matt texture.
  4. Let the gloss cure as its maker instructs.
  5. Mix the matt or satin varnish very thoroughly and apply one or two thin coats in good conditions.
  6. If the frosting is still there, it may be in the paint layer itself; strip or repaint that panel.

What to avoid

  • Spraying more matt over frosting: it usually makes it worse.
  • Spraying outdoors in damp or cold weather.
  • Heavy single coats.

Common wrong fixes

  • Heating the model with a hair dryer to dry the varnish: it can warp plastic and blister paint.
  • Scrubbing with strong thinner: it can remove the paint as well.

Not worth fixing, or time to ask us

Light frosting in recesses on a weathered model can pass as dust. Ask us which varnish suits your paint before a rescue attempt on an important model.

By situation or hobby

Gunpla top coats (spray cans)

Very common in humid summers. Spray light mist coats from the distance on the can, in a dry room, and avoid spraying near open windows on rainy days.

Minis (spray matt)

Some painters report that a gloss coat followed by matt clears most frosting; others report partial success. Test on one figure.

Airbrushed acrylic varnish

Less prone to blushing, but heavy matt coats still frost: thin per the maker and use light passes.

Over metallics

Some matt varnishes frost or dull metallic paints; seal metallics with gloss or skip matt over them.

Already ruined?

Gloss first (often the most effective), then re-matt thinly. Some hobbyists report wiping frosting lightly with a slightly rough cloth or a brush with the varnish's own thinner removes surface bloom, but test this on a hidden area first; it can also remove paint. If nothing works, strip the affected part and repaint.

Next time

  • Spray varnish only in low humidity (a hygrometer helps).
  • Keep can, model and room at room temperature.
  • Mix varnish thoroughly.
  • Thin, light coats.
  • Make sure paint is cured before varnishing.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my matte varnish turn white?

Usually humidity, cold conditions, or a matt coat applied too heavily or unmixed.

Can you fix frosted varnish?

Often. A thin gloss coat in dry conditions clears much of it; then re-apply matt thinly. Results vary.

Does gloss varnish fix frosting?

It is the most common fix and often works, but not always completely. Test on a hidden area first.

What humidity is too high for spraying varnish?

There is no single limit; many modellers avoid spraying when it feels humid or above roughly 60-65% relative humidity.

Why is my Gunpla top coat cloudy?

Usually spraying too heavy or in humid conditions. Use light mist coats in a dry, warm room.

Jargon explained
Blushing
Moisture trapped in a drying coat that turns it milky or white.
Frosting
A white, chalky look from matting agent or trapped moisture in a matt coat.
