Super glue white residue and glue marks

A white haze, powdery film or shiny glue smears around super glue joints. It can be polished, sanded or hidden, and glued cleanly next time.

Quick answer

The white film around a super glue joint is CA frosting: glue vapor reacting with moisture and settling on the plastic. Shiny lumps and smears are excess glue. On a part you will paint, sand the glue flush and prime over the haze. On bare or finished parts, polish the haze with fine polishing compound, or hide light frosting under a clear coat. Next time, use tiny amounts applied with a fine applicator, and keep air moving.

  • DifficultyBeginner

Safety first

  • CA bonds skin in seconds: keep a debonder or warm soapy water handy and never pull bonded skin apart.
  • CA reacting with cotton, tissue or wool can get hot quickly: do not wipe large amounts with them.
  • Ventilate; CA vapor irritates eyes and airways.

Is this your problem?

  • White haze on clear partsSee Fogged clear parts.
  • White haze around a joint on normal plasticCA frosting: this page.
  • Hard shiny lump or smearExcess cured glue: sand or scrape flush.
  • Soft, melted or dented plastic near the jointThat is plastic cement damage, not CA: fill and sand.
  • Pale patch at a cut pointStress mark: see White stress marks and nub marks.

You'll see

A white or gray powdery haze, sometimes in a ring around a joint, or a hard shiny smear or bead of glue next to it, often with a fingerprint in it.

Likely causes

  • Too much glueMore glue means more vapor and slower curing, so more frosting and more squeeze-out.
  • Moisture and still airCA cures by reacting with moisture; vapor settles as white powder where air does not move it away.
  • Accelerator useA fast reaction can make glue bloom or whiten around the joint.
  • Applying from the bottle nozzleLarge drops and strings end up where you did not want them.
  • Touching the jointFingerprints get set into wet CA.

What you need

  • Fine glue applicators or a toothpick
  • Sanding sticks or sponges
  • Sharp blade or scraper
  • Polishing compound and soft cloth
  • Primer (for painted builds)

How to fix it

  1. Let the glue cure fully before touching it.
  2. Scrape any bead or lump flush with the edge of a sharp blade, then sand smooth with a fine sanding stick.
  3. For haze on a part you will paint: sand lightly and prime; primer covers frosting well.
  4. For haze on bare or finished plastic: polish gently with fine polishing compound on a soft cloth.
  5. Light haze on a painted model can often be hidden under a clear coat.
  6. Next time, apply a small drop to a palette or foil and pick it up with a fine applicator, then place it on the joint.

What to avoid

  • Applying glue straight from the bottle onto the model.
  • Using CA near clear parts.
  • Wiping wet CA with tissue (it can bond and heat up).

Common wrong fixes

  • Acetone on plastic kits: it dissolves CA but can also melt or craze stirene.
  • Breathing on the joint to cure it faster: it adds moisture and frost.

Not worth fixing, or time to ask us

If glue has run into fine detail you cannot sand, ask us before trying solvents. Light frosting under paint does not need fixing.

By situation or hobby

Gunpla

Glue is only needed for repairs or seam work. CA on visible bare plastic will show; use tiny amounts on hidden faces.

Resin and metal miniatures

CA is the normal glue here; frosting is hidden by primer, so focus on avoiding excess glue.

Photo-etch

Use the smallest amount on a fine applicator; frost shows on the brass but primer hides it.

Painted, finished models

Polish with care; compound can change the sheen. Re-varnish the area to match.

Already ruined?

If a glue smear has fingerprints in it, sand it flush, smooth through fine grits and spot-paint. For haze that will not polish out on a finished part, a light clear coat in the original sheen usually blends it.

Next time

  • Decant a drop and use an applicator, not the nozzle.
  • Use the least glue that holds.
  • Keep air moving while it cures.
  • Do not touch the joint until cured.

Frequently asked questions

Why does super glue leave a white residue?

Glue vapor reacts with moisture in the air and settles as a white film around the joint. This is called frosting or blooming.

How do you remove super glue white residue from plastic?

Polish it with a fine polishing compound, sand lightly and prime if you will paint, or hide light haze under a clear coat.

Can I use acetone to remove super glue from a model?

Not recommended on plastic kits: acetone can melt or craze the plastic. Scrape, sand and polish instead.

Is there super glue without white residue?

Some CA glues are sold as low-bloom and frost less, but using less glue and moving air helps most.

Can you paint over super glue?

Yes, once fully cured. Sand any lumps flush first; primer covers frosting.

Jargon explained
CA
Cyanoacrylate, super glue.
Debonder
A solvent made to soften cured CA, mainly used for skin and tool clean-up.
